How did you get into management?
I set up a booking agency in Brisbane in 1992, after a few years learning how things worked and a few big learning curves I fell in love with a demo tape I was sent in about 1996 and bowed out of booking scores of artists to focus on the career development of just one. I am bit of a serial monogamist with artists until the last couple of years.
What do you see as the biggest challenge in 2015 for artist managers and/or their artists?
Sustaining long term career development with any hope of achieving economic career stability beyond any current "cycle".
What is your hot tip for getting started in artist management:
Have a deep connection to the music, be intrinsically motivated and keep one eye on the long game.
What is your hot tip for helping/sustaining your artist management business:
Keep your own sanity, your own physical health and your own personal relationships - do not become an extension of your artist.
Name 2 people within the music industry who have helped you get where you are:
John Woodruff told me once at workshop in Brisbane, when he was on the first wave of Savage Garden, that there was no reason I couldn't be a music manager and to just get on with doing it - I did it.
The Queensland Music community - more than one person I know I cheated - but without the the peer support, the new players, the wisdom of the stayers , the fierce and fearless and the huge growth of BIGSOUND with Q Music I could never have worked in this business for 20 years from my home in Brisbane.
What are you currently listening to?
Thelma Plum album demos, a killer track by Dark Fair "Listen Up" http://rd.io/x/QUZPZDdc6aKq/ and the new Daniel John's stuff I am loving so far.
