QANTAS Spirit of Youth Awards now open for Musicians

The Qantas Spirit of Youth Award is a competition that offers musicians aged 30 and under the chance to accelerate their creative careers with a ticket to anywhere.

$5,000 in Qantas flights will see the category winner jet away to wherever inspiration and opportunity dictate. The winner will also receive a cash prize of $5,000 and will be offered a professional mentorship with internationally recognised producer, songwriter and engineer Lee Groves (Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, Bertie Blackman). Musicians from all genres are encouraged to enter the competition.

2012 Music winner Caitlin Park says that winning the prize presented her with several opportunities. “Most importantly,” says Caitlin, “it fed a hunger to make music and be creative.” Caitlin was flown to New York for the highly regarded CMJ Music Marathon. “I felt very proud to be an Australian musician,” she says.

First held in 2004, the Qantas SOYAs have previously recognised the musical talents of artists such as kyü, Oh Mercy, My Disco, Wolf & Cub and Young & Restless.

Lee Groves, who is judging the music category for the third time, is excited to be involved in the awards again in 2013. “The entries show that a musically rich landscape exists in Australia,” says Lee. “It’s been so rewarding for me to mentor previous winners and help develop their careers with assistance from the Qantas SOYA program.”
